Describe the four dimentions of film editing and give examples from clips screened in class...

The four dimensions of film editing are graphic relations between shot A and shot B- graphic configurations that display patterns of light and dark, line and shape, volumes and depths, movement and stasis. An example is in Hitchcock. There was no drastic brightness from each shot because the scene takes place during the day. Rhythmic relations between shot A and B- every shot is a certain legnth with the series of frames consuming a certain amount of time onscreen. Film formats run 24 or 25 seconds per frame. Spatial relations between shot A and shot B- when editing constructs film space. You have to start with an establishing shot with a spatial whole followed a shot of a part of the space.Temporal relations between shot A and shot B- being able to control the time of the action presented in the film. There is order of presentation of events. An example is in the Bird series when Melanie turns away, then sees the gull swoop, then she responded.

Editing describes the relationship between shots and the process by which they are combined.The four dimensions of film editing are grapichic relation(light and dark), rhythmical relations(film pace/the flow), spatial relations(contruct film space), and temporal relations(control time). In the video we watched in class you see how in the early stages films on stayed at one scene but when editing took effect films started telling stories better. One example of editing is from "Battleship Potemkin" with the baby stroller

The four dimensions of film editing are graphic relations that demonstrate light and dark, rhythmical relations which is the the flow and pace of the film, they are a certain length and take a lot of time onscreen. Spatial relations build film space and temporal relations control the time of the film. As film editing started to develop, the stories and plots of various film began to be processed and seen better. An example that we talked about in class is the bird series.

  4. The four components of film editing are the rhythmic, spatial, temporal and the graphic relationship. The rhythmic and graphic dimensions are shown in the shower scene of Psycho. The shower scene starts with a long take without any edits to give the audience a sense of a calm and normal setting. The mood then changes from calm to suspenseful. The use of editing in this scene made it more fast paced but also in tune with the motion of stabbing made by the killer. The sound effects of screeching and eerie noises also created an even more suspenseful setting. The spatial relation is when there is a similar space between Shot A and B. An example of this is the mixture of blood and water swirling down the drain, which then is followed by an extreme close-up of the eyes of the deceased woman.

  5. The four dimensions of film editing are listed as temporal , graphic , spatial and rhythmic relations . Temporal is the process in which the difference between temporal duration and screen duration is reconciled. As for graphic relation,it creates transitions between shots that are either graphically similar or dissimilar in terms of light,shape,depth or movement. Rhythmic relation is the manipulation of the length of shots in relation to one another to create a desire effect. Lastly, spatial relation is merely referred to as the establishing shot in film editing. The Establishing Shot or sequence serves to situate the audience within a particular environment or setting and/ or to introduce an important character or characters. As an example , in the movie Psycho,by Hitchcock we see the graphic relation method as the woman is burtally stabbed to death in the shower. As the blood washes down the drain with the water , the camera slowly zooms into the drain ,and then the camera transitions to the center of her pupil creating a matching cut shot.

Rhythmic relation is the manipulation of the length of shots in relation to one another to succeed the desired outcome. Spatial relation is similar space between shots A and B when establishing the shot. For example, in Psycho when the blood was washing down the drain, the next scene picked up as a close-up of an eye to create an illusion between similar shapes. Graphic relation present configurations that display patterns light, shape, movement, and depth. Temporal relations control the time of action in the film. There must be an order of events presented effectively to enhance the viewers interpretation of the film as seen in the Bird Series. These four dimensions of editing make it easier for editors to indicate certain signs throughout the movie.

Rhythmic is editing describes an assembling of shots and/or sequences according to a rhythmic pattern of some kind, usually dictated by music. Spatial relations are sequence serves to situate the audience within a particular environment or setting and/ or to introduce an important character or characters. Graphic relation helps display light, patterns, shapes, movement and depth in film. Lastly Temporal relation basically just controls time of action in film. An example was Psycho, by Alfred Hitchcock as they showed a women being stabbed to death while showering in the bathroom and blood runs down to the drain as her body lies in the tube.

In Graphic relations the film editors primary focus is to ensure continuity of the narrative and to be aware of the films visual art by creating transitions etc. Rhythmical relations refers to the way the editor or director adjust the length of the shots in relation to on another. Spatial relations helps construct the space of the film and provides perceives a reliable sense of the physical space that constitutes the world of the film. Temporal relations refers to the order, duration, and frequency of events including flashbacks, flash-forwards, and overlapping

  11. The four dimensions of editing films are Graphic which will help show display lighting, movements, and patterns/shapes. Rhthmitic which describes the shots to create a desired effect and controls film pace. Temporal relations controls the time. A great example is the bird series we discussed in class. Spatial relation is the a similar space between shots called A and B helping to construct space of the film.

Graphic also compares patterns of light and dark, line and shape, volumes and depths, movement and stasis. Rhythmic is when the relations between shots function to control film pace. Rhythmic function occurs when several shot lengths form a discernible pattern. Temporal is when the relations between shots function to control time. Temporal also works to convey the order, duration, or frequency of events. Spatial is when relations between shots function to construct film space. We saw all the dimensions in the film “Physco” in the scene with the woman getting stabbed in the shower.

Second dimension is Graphic relations the film editors’ main concentration is to guarantee steadiness of the story and to be alert of the films pictorial art by generating transitions etc. Third dimension is Rhythmical relations refers to the way the editor or director regulate the span of the shots in the relation to another. To begin, Spatial contracts film space while temporal controls the timing of the film. Rhythmic occurs when multiple shot lengths from a noticeable pattern. Example, is the opening scene in the movie "Do The Right Thing" Rosie Perez is seen dancing in different costumes and in different settings. Rhythmic editing is when the relations between shots function to control film pace. In Rhythmic relations a shot's physical length corresponds to a measurable duration. Speeding the shots up or slowing the shots down can change the pace and overall message of the film and its content. Graphic matches also known as match cuts are useful in relating two disconnected scenes or helping to establish a relationship between the two. Temporal editing is when the relations between shots function to control time. An example of graphic match is from Hicthcock's Psycho, when the center of the drain becomes the iris of the women's eye. An example of rhythm editing is when the shots matches the rhythm of music or a beat. An example of spatial editing is continuity in a film made by match cuts. An example of temporal editing is when the viewers can't assume what is going to happen next because the scene constantly shifts.

  25. Editing is the coordination of one shot with another. Editing allows smooth transitions when introducing scenes, switching scenes, and ending scenes. There are four dimensions of editing and they are graphic, rhythmic, spatial, and temporal. Examples of editing include fade in, fade out, dissolve, super imposition, wipe out, cut, jump cut, etc. The graphic dimension can refer to the light and darkness of a scene. One graphic relation can be the link to the next scene. For example, a shot of the sun could be a transition into a scene that starts with a close up of a coffee mug. Here both objects are round and the similarities make the transition smooth. Another example would be the stabbing scene from the movie "Psycho."Color can also be used as a similarity for transitions. As for rhythmic flow (hence the name), this technic is popularly used alongside music and in montages. Spatial relation is used to establish conflict, the environment of the film, and pov. It is used normally in establishing shots for viewers to get a sense of the character's environment and predicament. Spatial relation in editing can also help alternate in between characters to show both sides of a conversation.Lastly, temporal relation is the control of time that allows the same scene of action to be seen from multiple angles as an continuous action. It allows actions in a scene without revealing how long it actually took.

The third one is rhythmical relations which refers to the directors length of a shot. Lastly, the fourth dimension is temporal which is the duration.

    The four dimensions are temporal, spatial, graphic, and rhythmic. Spatial is a similar shot between shot A and B, that constructs film spaces. Temporal is when the action of a film appears. Graphics are the lights, shapes, volumes, depth, etc... Rhythmic is basically when different shots are formed to make a particular pattern. An example in class was when the women was being murdered while she was showering.

They used time and space to construct a plot that we never saw coming.
